A professional collection of books and periodicals is also part of the media collection. This collection is located in the Teacher Resource Room of the media center.

Our Parent Resource Collection contains a wide variety of books, videos, journals and other media. Parents are encouraged  to browse this collection and check out any of these excellent resources.

Goals

The media center is an integral component of the school's educational program. The primary goals of the media program are to teach information skills, promote reading and the appreciation of literature, and to provide materials and services that support and enhance the curriculum.
Activities to Promote Reading

The media staff and Language Arts teachers encourage reading through the Battle of the Books program. A grade reading list is provided for each student. Several months of reading, projects, and other classroom activities culminate in our school competition in February. The winning team from each grade competes in the Wake County Battle of the Books Championship in April.

Students are invited to illustrate their favorite book for the media center's Battle of the Books Mini-Poster Contest. This popular competition is held annually in November.

Teen Read Week in October celebrates the fun of reading. Local celebrities are invited by the media staff to read aloud to Language Arts classes. Contests, service projects, and school-wide READ-INS make this an exciting observance for our students.

Book Fairs are a favorite way to promote reading at our school. At least one book fair is held each year. Students and staff enjoy purchasing a variety of books and miscellaneous items. Profits from the book fair are used to purchase books and other materials for the media collection.
Parent Volunteers

Our parent volunteers are a tremendous asset to our media program. Volunteers may work on a regular schedule performing a variety of tasks or may work at special events such as our book fairs or Battle of the Books competitions. Please call the media staff at 554-8450 if you would like to volunteer.
