My name is Michael Meyer and I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I received my B.S. from Allegheny College (Meadville, PA) and my M.Ed. from Penn State University . I spent four years at Cedar Creek and Bunn Middle Schools in Franklin County. Just before coming here in November, 2005, I worked a little over one year at Hawfields Middle School in The Alamance-Burlington School System.
I take great pride in working with students to start creative projects that most schools do not offer. Service-learning and teaching citizenship are essential pieces of becoming a whole person. I believe these are also an essential piece of public education. I run the Social-Organization and Service Club, which organized the Fun Fair, Laser Show, and Dance Marathon the last two school years. This event raised $13,600 for Duke Children's Miracle Network and The North Carolina Children's Hospital last June. Students played a direct role in every aspect of this project's organization. This includes obtaining sponsorship, planning the budget, promoting the event, and physically setting it up. In two years, our school has raised over $22,000 for local children's hospitals.
One of my favorite things about counseling is feeling like I have made a long-term positive difference in the life of a child. I was going to be a math teacher. But so many people used to tell me that they felt better about themselves after talking with me and they said I needed to be a counselor!
In addition to my work, I love to travel, take pictures (photography), ride roller coasters, and watch Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. Even almost 500 miles from Happy Valley, I still hold season tickets for Penn State football. Coach Joe Paterno was one of my role models as a child and he still is to this day! His popular saying “Success with honor” is one I try to instill in every student.
